Combined apprenticeship/college education

Apart from the usual German apprenticeships/vocational training courses
C.D. Wälzholz offers combined academic studies and job training in cooperation with technical colleges and polytechnics. This so-called "dual education" offers the advantage that you can have vocational training whilst being able to study at the same time.

Whilst the apprenticeship/vocational training will be carried out as usual according to the respective training schedule, there will be lectures and seminars at the college on Saturdays or in the evenings. Some of the subject matter will be taught on the basis of material sent to you by mail. The advantage of this kind of education is that the students will have a completed job training or apprenticeship as well as bachelor degree (or the German "Diplom").

For those interested we have listed some of the basic conditions
  • Ability to work under pressure
Considerably more hours a week, since the course material sent home to you has to be studied on top of the vocational training in the company; furthermore, there is no time off between semesters since the vocational training takes place all the year round. Thus perseverance is of crucial importance.
  • Mobility
The college might not be close to one of our locations.
  • Purposefulness
If you know exactly what you want and if you are prepared to reach these goals without any interruptions by studying and learning intensively, you will stand a good chance with the "dual education" scheme.
  • Practical interests
You should be genuinely interested in transforming theoretical basics into practical ideas.
Advantages of the "dual education":
  • Apprenticeship pay
  • Tuition fees paid for by C.D. Wälzholz
  • Theory can be transformed into practice immediately (studies in step with actual practice)
  • Best preparation for professional experience
  • Large number of students will be employed by CDW (graduates know all departments of the company)
  • Younger when entering first job
  • Ideas from business might be beneficially used for studies
Disadvantages of the "dual education":
  • Only leave days, no semester holidays
  • Considerably less contact with research
  • Degrees: Only "Diplom (FH)" or "Bachelor" are possible
  • It is more difficult to receive a PhD later
  • If the student terminates his/her training on his/her own request, he/she might have to reimburse the company
